What?

Approach

With sustainability there is no one size fits all solution, however a number of initiatives are well advanced and provide excellent templates that are capable of being tailored to suit individual organisations.

Sustainability and its reporting will not provide any benefit to an organisation if treated as a PR bolt on. This view is supported in BS 8900:2006 Guidance for managing sustainable development which states that organisations should "embed sustainable development into its existing planning and management processes (e.g. for risk assessment, planning, performance management, information systems, training and development and reporting), rather than establish separate processes".

The Accounting Sustainability Project established by the Prince of Wales aims to facilitate reporting of sustainablity performance in a way that is connected with organisations' overall strategy and financial performance.

The Global Reporting Initiative

Provides a broad based framework for reporting on an organisation's economic, environmental and social performance. It has application levels to enable a structured introduction using titles C, B and A where A is advanced. The introductory level C requires a minimum of 10 indicators including at least one environmental, social and economic indicator. Overall there are 79 indicators available before sector supplements are considered.

Accounting for Sustainability

Proposes a new model to report key sustainability information alongside conventional financial information. Proposed "Connected Reporting Framework" intentionally focuses on environmental issues but is intended to enable social and ethical factors to be incorporated. The five environmental indicators reported are: polluting emissions, energy use, water use and significant use of other finite resources.
